Don Brown, architect of the defense that led UMass to the 1998 IAA national championship, has returned to become the U Mass Head Football coach. Prior to returning to U Mass Coach, Brown was the head football coach at Northeastern University where an incredible transformation took place under Coach Browns' direction. With only two winning seasons in the prior 12 years of football at NU, Coach Brown's motivational style of coaching instilled the proper philosophy to lead NU to a 27-20 record in his four years at the helm. During that time Coach Brown's 2002 team made their first ever appearance in the 1AA playoffs and ranked #11 in the nation, also claiming a share of the Atlantic 10 title. In 2003, NU returned to the 1AA playoffs and ranked 20th in the nation. In 2002, Coach Brown received the American Football Coaches Association Region I Coach of the Year honors and also received the 2002 New England Football Writers Coach of the Year Award.
In 2006, Don Brown lead the U Mass team to the finals in the NCAA Division 1 playoffs.
Coach Brown was also the recipient of the Division 1 Coach of the Year awarded by the Gridiron Club of Greater Boston.
